Spontaneous Creativity: Student Duet on Paula Dreyer’s “Current”, performed by Elouise and Chloe

I’m thrilled to share a spontaneous and creative moment from a recent lesson. In this video, two of my piano students perform “Current” by Paula Dreyer—an expressive piece from her Little Gems for Piano collection.

What makes this performance especially exciting is that it was recorded just minutes after the students were given the challenge to create a duet together. One student quickly composed an original duet part to accompany the main melody, and together they shaped a collaborative performance on the spot.

This kind of on-the-fly creativity not only deepens their understanding of harmony and musical form, but also builds confidence and encourages a sense of play in the learning process. It’s a great example of the skills my students develop beyond playing the notes on the page.
